Barry Whiteley Trophy 2018 - Third event!

trophy 2The third and final Seniors outing of 2018 saw sixteen Seniors venture to the Eden course near carlisle.  For the first time this year, the weather didn't play ball for the whole round.  It was very damp for the fist 9 holes, but the rain eased off for the back nine.    Ron Roberston shrugged of the disappointment of just missing out on the prize money in the September medal at Minto the day before when he left everyone in his wake with 39 Stableford points.  This was on a card where he failed to score at two holes.  The handicap secretary is watching closely!.

Congratulations on your win Ron.  David Squirrell took second place on 33 points.  Nearest the pin winners were John Hamilton, Jim Adams and Michael McFarlane.  John was actually closest on two greens but the rules limit golfers to only one major prize.

The weather didn't spoil the day though.  The golf was good for the conditions.  The course was enjoyable and the meal was excellent.  Jim Welsh e-mailed the Eden thanking them for their hospitality and they have responded thanking Jim and expressing a wish that we can come back on a sunny day.

We have had another enjoyable season of Seniors outing for which we express thanks to Jim Welsh for organising it all and making sure we play on great courses with good facilities.  Jim puts a lot of work into planning and organising the outings every year.  I wonder where the Seniors will go next year?

Full results of the Eden Outing are given below.  Jim Welsh and Joe Hannaford also played but may not wish scores less than 20 to be made public!

Outing to Broomieknowe - 26th July

Seniors Outings are played for the honour of holding the Barry Whiteley Trophy.  Barry was a stalwart member of Minto Seniors for many years.  Following his death, his family presented Minto Seniors with a Trophy in his name.  The Trophy is played for at Seniors Outings and the second winner in 2018 is Duncan Shiell.  Seniors went to Broomieknowe on Thursday 26th July.  The course was in excellent condition and the weather was ideal for an outing.  There was an excellent turnout of twenty-six Seniors, the largest number for a while.

It was very close at the top of the leaderboard where Ron Elliot and John Law also shot 38 Stableford points.  Duncan had the best inward half of 18.  Ron and John both had 16 points for the back nine, and also shared 13 points for the last six.  It was only by looking at the scores on the last three holes that Ron and John could be separated.  Ron's 8 trumped John's 6 so Ron took second prize.

There were three nearest the pin prizes, won by Jim Adams, Gordon Wilks and Albert Thompson.

The course was ideal for Seniors with a good number of flat holes at the begiining and end of the round.  There are no par 5s off the yellow tees.  There were more contours on one the middle part of the course, so it was a little bit surprising that Broomieknowe only had one buggy available for hire.

Minto Seniors were made very welcome by Broomieknowe members and staff

Thanks to Jim Welsh for organising the outing in his usual efficient way.  The next outing will be to Eden on Thursday 13th September. All Seniors are very welcome to come along to an outing.  The sign up sheet for the  is on the Club Noticeboard now.

Full results from Bromomieknowe are given below.  Outside the first three, there is no attempt to resolve ties.

Outing to Lochmaben - 24th May

the first winner in 2018 is Angus Scott.  Seniors went to Lochmaben on Thursday 24th May and played a superb course in the best possible weather.  Fifteen Seniors made the trip to Lochmaben.

After the golf, the players were treated to an excellent meal in the Clubbhouse.

Minto players found the course quite tough to play such that nobody managed to break par.  The leading score was 31 and countback ad to be called into play to separate the two leaders.  Angus Scott had the better inward half, so he took the trophy.  Jim Adams, also on 31 points, just missed out on the top prize.  Angus and Jim were three points ahead of another thwo Seniors sharing a score.  John Law and Tam Glendinning both had 28 points..

Prizes were also presented for nearest the pin.  These went to John Law, David Howden and Ray Johnson.

The full results from Lochmaben can be found below the picture of Angus Scott [left] receiving the Whiteley Trophy from Jim Welsh.  Thanks to Albert Thompson for the photograph.
