Gents Seniors Match v Bellingham - Minto win!

golf match icon

This was the first Seniors Match between Minto and Bellingham.  Thanks to Jim Adams for setting up the fixture.  Both teams were only able to field ten players, but that didn't distract from the day.  The dry weather continued and the ball ran a long way on the fairways.  Most of the rubbers were closely fought affairs with four going to the 17th or 18th green.  In the end, Minto prevailed with a 3.5 to 1.5 win.

The match against Bellingham will be played once a year, so Minto will travel to Bellingham for the return next year.  However, we look forward to going to Bellingham in late September (27th) to play in the second Borders 4-Club Texas Scramble of the season along with friends from Kelso and Duns.

The result strengthens Minto Seniors perfromance in matches this season.  See results and summary to date further below.

Iain Oliver and Angus Scott got Minto off to a good start with a 2&1 victory in the top game.  Albert Thompson & Eric English then came in with a half before Minto sealed the match with victories in Rubbers 3 and 4.

Thanks to Michael and Lily inthe  Kitchen / Servery and Steven behind the bar to ensure that the Clubhouse service went well.

Match v The Woll - Home 14th June

Minto Seniors took full advantage of home advantage to record a 4-2 win over The Woll on Thursday 14th June.  Good conditions meant that the course was playing well and the greens ran true.  The match was the first for our new Chef, Michael, but he and and Lynsay behind the bar and Anne Witherington on waitress duties all rose to the challenge.

The result puts Minto Seniors in positive territory in terms of ties won and lost this season.

These matches are always good fun and are played in a friendly competitive spirit.  After the golf there is usually a 2 course meal.  A small charge is made - £10 in recent years - but that fee may have to rise slightly in 2018.  Even if it rises, it's still a bargain price especially when you play on an away course and get fed.

The fixture list takes in Bellingham this year as well as the more traditional hunting grounds of Rothbury, Peebles, Kelso, Duns, The Woll, The Hirsel, Goswick and West Linton

The notice is pinned up in the Gents Changing Room on the inside wall, not on the Seniors Notice Board.

Match v Duns - Away - 7th June

Well, perhaps the headline is a bit misleading, but compared to last year's 6-0 thrashing in the monsoons of Duns, Minto got much closer this time, just losing by 4-2 with four ties ties going to the 17th or 18th greens.  The weather couldn't have been more different this year compared to last with plenty of sunshine and very little wind.  Duns is a longer course than Minto, so Minto were always going to be the underdogs.

The best performance came rorm Iain Oliver and Gordon Wilks who came home 2&1 winners.  Two other ties were halved to generate Minto's 2 points.

There was a little bit of alarm before the match when Alister Legge managed to lock himself inside his car for a few minutes before being rescued.  Everybody was looking for Alister to tell him his car alarm was going, but nobody thought to look inside the car when they first heard the alarm.

Minto v Peebles (Away) - 29th May

Peebles is a Club with plenty of resources so it was good to go there and hold the Peebles Seniors on their home turf.  As ever, the views and the hospitality were excellent.  The match ended in 3-3 tie with many rubbers which could have gone either way. At one point as the individual ties came in, Minto has a lead but a draw is a very good result.  Alister Legge captained the Minto team with strong support from Jim Adams.

Match v Goswick - Home, 1st May

After a narrow loss at Rothbury two weeks ago, Minto Seniors got into their stride with a 4-2 win over Goswick at Minto on Tuesday 1st May.  Thanks to Jim Adams and Albert Thompson for their roles as team manager and captain respectively. It was a match where Minto players represented both teams. Goswick had previously informed us that due to call-offs they could only bring ten Seniors, but the long-standing friendly relationship between the two clubs meant that Minto could help balance the teams. Albert Thompson and Pim McDonnell donned Goswick colours  for the day.  Goswick's Captain David Wilson, was very appreciative of Albert's offer.

Unfortunately, after having provided two men to play for Goswick, one of the Minto team then had to withdraw with damaged elbow, leaving Minto a man short. Although Albert phoned a number of Seniors, none of them were able to attend, but luckily he had noticed a lone golfer teeing off earlier so he made his way to the sixth hole where David Whigham was playing  David readily agreed make his debut into the Seniors matches and represen tMinto.

As a token of appreciation to Minto Seniors for providing players for his team, Captain Dave Wilson has invited us to bring sixteen players when we play the return match at Goswick in November.

Match v Rothbury - Away, 16th April

The Seniors 2018 series of matches got underway yesterday (Monday 16th April) when Minto ventured across the border to Rothbury.  The Rothbury match is usually the curtain raiser for the season..The sun shone for most of the time and people were seen without waterproofs and windcheaters as the match came to an exciting conclusion.

In the end, the Home team won by the odd half point, 3.5 to 2.5.  After four rubbers, Minto were just ahead, but couldn't hold out. The full results can be found further below.

As ever, the ties were played in a very friendly spirit.  Rothbury were excellent hosts providing a bacon roll & coffee before the match with a main course for lunch.  WE will host Rothbury at Minto in September.  Ron Elliot was described by Minto's team Captain John Law as the star performer of the day when John said that Ron holed a 300 foot putt to help Minto to halve the tie.  We suspect that there was a modicum of exaggeration there, but ti was clearly a long putt.
